The location is Moorside Lane bridge, where the freight line from Neston Colliery (right-hand track) joins the line from Hooton. The Donkey Stand - Parkgate's first Assembly Room once stood here, later becoming a sea-water bathing house. From the 1870s it was a place for donkey rides. 2. Balcony House - built in the late 1700s, though the balcony was added 1870. The large rear extension was Parkgate's next Assembly Room, where dances were held and cards and billiards played. 3. The Sea Wall - built in 3 phases in early 1800s. It was never intended for ships to moor against, just a fashionable place to walk. 4. Mostyn Square & St. Thomas' Church - the Square is named after the Welsh family which owned much of Parkgate until 1849. The 'Fisherman's Church' was built in 1843. 5. Middle Slip - once much used by fishermen, and donkey carts collecting shellfish. The Old Watch Houseopposite was used by H.M. Customs until 1828. 6. The Boat House - built in 1926 on the site of an inn that was standing here almost 400 years ago, serving an important anchorage offshore called Beerhouse Hole. 7. The Old Baths - the grey walls are the remains of the seawater swimming baths opened in 1923. The larger one was 100 metres long. 8. The Wirral Way - line of the old Hooton - West Kirby railway line, closed in 1962, which became Britain's first Country Park in 1969, opening to the public in 1973. 9. Parkgate Station - Originally the railway line ended here and the station was on the south side of the road,. Later, the line was extended to West Kirby, a bridge was built over the road, and a second station was built on the north side of the road. 10. The Anti-Invasion Pillbox - built by the Home Guard as a gun emplacement in 1940 in case German paratroops landed on the Dee estuary. It has now been converted into a bat house. 11. Nelson Cottage - the pebbles spell the name of the 1822 owner's nine year old son who drowned in a storm on the Mersey. 12. Dover Cottage - believed to be where Emma Hart (nee Lyon), later Lady Hamilton, the mistress of Admiral Nelson, stayed whilst on a sea-bathing trip. 13. Mostyn House - was a school run by the Grenfell family from 1862 to 2010; the black and white facade was built in 1932. This building now houses more than 40 apartments. 14. The double hedge - marks the line of the railway that once ran to the coal mine at Little Neston. 15. The Old Quay - once the site of a large shipping quay projecting into the estuary, used from roughly 1560 to 1690. Thousands of passengers passed through here in some years. 16. Moorside Lane - the original entrance to Neston deer park is thought to have been near here. A new pond had been created but was not easily accessible by all visitors. This project provided safe access for people with mobility issues to be able to view the Dee Marshes and the wildlife across a wider panorama. New Landscaping: the area was sympathetically cleared and landscaped with the new design including seating. The landscaping also opened up the sight lines, reducing the opportunities for anti-social behaviour at the location. Information boards: there are new interpretation boards at the site to help with identification of bird and other wildlife. AG Grenfell, the headmaster of Mostyn House School from 1893 to 1933; at the heart of this building was the former Mostyn Arms Hotel, which became a school in 1855. To the rear an assembly room was added in about 1780. The balcony, which gives the building its name, was added in 1868. This was necessary because, when the wall was built c1800, a building stood here on the seaward side of the roadway. After about 16 years out of use, it was renovated and re-opened for worship and community use in 2010. To the right, set further back, can be seen the Coastguard Cottages of 1860. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/620edcea6aa1a64fb5f0b1f4/380397c6-f0ef-4dda-a058-b5e01b27efe2/Middle+Slip+%26+Watchhouse.jpg Parkgate Heritage Trail - Make it stand out 11) THE MIDDLE SLIPWAY AND THE OLD WATCH HOUSE This slipway on which the boat stands was the northern extremity of the original section of the sea wall, when completed about 1810 or, perhaps, a little earlier. It was a great centre of activity when used by local fishermen to land their catches at high tide. It is overlooked by the Old Watch House, which precedes it by almost a century; from 1799 to 1828 this small cottage was leased by the Customs service, who used it to keep an eye on local shipping at a time when smuggling was prevalent in the area. It is built on the site of the former Pengwern Arms, an old coaching inn, which was demolished in 1885 following storm damage a little earlier. One fills through gullies from the main estuary channel (yellow centre); the other, nearer one, fills from the gulley which runs parallel to Parkgate Parade (red arrow). No Pavement? Where did people walk? This picture is taken looking north along the parade from close to Mostyn Square. The building jutting out in the distance is the house called "Overdee". Notice the boats at anchor, the un-surfaced road and the lack of pavement at this time. With little traffic, people were free to walk in the road. From Parkgate the channel of the river is barely visible, but the view from the A55 in Flintshire confirms that at this point the marsh extends for only about a third of the total width of the estuary. The River Dee was canalised in the 18th century between Chester and Connah’s Quay in order to restore a channel for shipping to the ancient port of Chester; the work was completed in 1737. The building of this channel directed the flow of the river over to the Welsh side of the estuary, and the subsequent lack of flow on the Cheshire side accelerated the silting there, eventually bringing to an end the shipping at Parkgate. By 1810 the Dublin Packet service had transferred to Liverpool. The continued silting later led to the creation of the marsh. Horses with light carts stand on the beach close to the water’s edge, waiting to transport the fish & shell fish back to shore for processing. The boats are moored on the edge of the channel, and on close inspection you can see the steep gradient between the beach and the channel. In the mid-19th century there had been an annual regatta organised by the short-lived Parkgate Sailing Club, which later transferred to West Kirby. The later Parkgate regattas were an annual event for local fishermen from the various fishing fleets around the Dee estuary. There were both sailing and rowing races to include all boat types (nobbies, yawls and punts). The final competition of the regatta was always a tug of war, traditionally held between the Parkgate and the Neston fishermen. The block in the middle of the picture contains three houses, each with steep steps up to the front door. These steps were intended to make sure that the ground floor was sufficiently raised to avoid the possibility of flooding from the sea in stormy conditions. The middle house is called "Seven Steps", as there were originally seven steps here; but resurfacing of the road has meant that only five of them currently remain visible. The whole block is a grade II* listed building, and these are some of Parkgate’s earliest houses, dating from about 1720. It is thought that they were originally built to provide accommodation for travellers and traders while they waited here for their ships. The fisherman on the left with bare feet was Bill Smith, also known as “6ft!!” He worked on the boats with his brother, Dick Smith, and lived in Teal Cottage, next door to Seven Steps, on The Parade. In those days this was probably the only place where there was sufficient space for this work to be undertaken. The lady serving the shrimps from the door was Mary Mealor, wife of Jack Mealor, a Parkgate fisherman. The produce will have been caught by her husband and processed on the premises. Parkgate prawns were a delicacy and not only sold locally, but shipped by train to other towns and cities in the region. In 1853 the Mealor family built Mealors Weint in the orchard that they owned, and built cottages there. The present Mealor family are the 8th & 9th generation of fishermen in Parkgate. By the 1940s the fishing methods were much the same, except that the ponies and carts have been replaced by a lorry. In this photograph you can see the shell-fish catch has been bagged up and is almost ready to be loaded for its onward journey. While most of the men are able to enjoy a bit of relaxation, three of them are still working, using a riddle to separate the catch from the waste. This little building overlooking the Middle Slipway dates from about 1720. It was used by the coastguard service as a Watch House until 1799, when it was taken over by the HM Customs to keep an eye on local shipping and, in particular, any smuggling. After the demise of the shipping traffic it became a private house. It is now much altered from its original form, but remains very much a feature of the Parkgate waterfront. The group probably took its name from the large double-fronted house Pengwern, at one time the home of a former Parkgate sea captain. The adjacent house, Sawyers Cottage, is believed to have been built before 1700, but probably about the same time as Pengwern. These may be the oldest surviving buildings in Parkgate. It was named after the occupation of the first publican, Richard Bartley, a sawyer and carpenter. It is thought that Bartley was a ship’s carpenter and that ships may have been constructed on the shore before the wall was built. This may be the reason for the orientation of Dee cottages. The granting of a licence to these premises coincides with the closure of the ship-building business and may have been a consequence of that event. This early picture shows the Sawyer’s Arms as a public house with details above the door and three beer barrels in front of the window, where the proprietor appears to be standing. The marsh looks very similar to its present-day appearance, though more of the sea wall is exposed; it became established during the 1939-45 war years. The channel seen in the picture is still present and marks the official boundary of the RSPB reserve; this organisation is responsible for the management of the marsh. At times it was also known as the Ferry House, and the Pengwern Arms, before it was demolished around 1885, following severe storm damage a few years earlier. The present structure (built in 1926) began as the Boathouse Café at a time when the nearby baths were flourishing. There was a good deep anchorage just offshore from the Boathouse, where in early days larger vessels could lay over and crews seek refreshment at the Beer House. A ferry service to Bagillt and Flint operated from here between 1814 and 1864. In that year the ferry service ended in disaster when Thomas Johnson, landlord of the Pengwern Arms (as it was then called), and his brother Joseph both died when attempting a landing in a heavy swell. This first pool was about 100 yards in length (twice as long as a current Olympic pool), and very deep in the vicinity of the high diving board. The pool had a deep and shallow side, as opposed to most pools with their deep and shallow ends. From an early date the bath was also opened to the general public and both proved extremely popular with visitors during the inter-war years. When war appeared inevitable, they were sold in 1939 to fund the building of a fully equipped underground air raid shelter in the school grounds. During the war years the water supply and filtration system struggled to cope with the effects of the encroaching marsh. You can just about make out the Boat House Cafe in the distance. By 1973 the old baths had been filled in and structures demolished, and the site incorporated into the Wirral Country Park. Much of the land has been laid out as a public car park for those wanting to start a local walk from this end of the village. Parts of the original Old Bath walls still remain, forming a boundary to the car park and picnic site. This is a good place for observing the local birdlife. Both the Wirral Country Park and the RSPB have information boards at this location overlooking the marsh. The fisherman on the left with bare feet was Bill Smith, also known as “6ft!!” He worked on the boats with his brother, Dick Smith, and lived in Teal Cottage, next door to Seven Steps, on The Parade.
